          The Geography Bee!!!!

             By: Zachary Fuchs

The Geography Bee is a school wide event where every social studies teacher in the whole school will set up their own way to decide the top five students who are knows their geography. The five winners faced each other in another Geography Bee (competition). Every grade level participated. Allowing only one sixth, seventh, and eighth grader left from each spring. The twelve individuals  competed in the last Big Geography Bee! It was fun to watch the friendly competition unfold.

The National Geographic Bee was held at Maple Avenue Middle School on Wednesday, January 18, 2017. Twelve students who beat out their classmates during preliminary rounds won the right to represent their spring at the school wide bee. Students were asked questions that tested their knowledge of states, river systems, continents, nations and cultures around the globe. After seven rounds of questioning, only two contestants remained for the championship round: Zachary Zeh (Red Springs Grade 8) and Evan Weatherwax (Red Springs Grade 6). The final question was “The Donets Basin is an industrial area shared by Russia and which neighboring country to the west?” Zach Zeh had the correct answer…Ukraine, and he was declared the 2017 National Geographic champion of Maple Ave.

This was Zach’s second visit to the Maple Avenue geographic bee and, as an eighth grader, it was his last chance to represent his school at the next level of competition. Zach will now take a qualifying test to determine if he will compete at the State Bee in April. Good luck, Zach!
