American Red Cross

Written by Azlyn Belise

Have you ever wondered how much your school could raise for such an important cause? Well…. I have and in the month of October, I figured out just how much Maple Ave really cared about Puerto Rico. After the hurricanes, our school wanted to try to help them. So the Student Council designed “Penny Wars”. Each homeroom would collect spare change and put it into their can and we would eventually have the student council total it all up and the winning homeroom would get a prize. But this isn’t how it went down for Team 8H. Mr. Fleming, the 8th grade Hathorn Social Studies teacher took it a step further and decided he would offer up his beard. Thus the idea of “Shave the Dawg’s Beard” was born. So he decided that he wanted to help the fellow American citizens in Puerto Rico, so he said:

  • If you raise $250 it comes off

  • If you raise $500 you can video tape it

  • And if you raise $1000 than you get something special

So after one week he added it up (He also got $800 from his yacht club) and the total was $1415.45. So our team raised over the $1000 mark and Miss. Hackman (at the time, now she is married) came and shaved part of his beard. But I will have to say that Team 7R stepped up the game and came in 2nd place. Honorable Mentions go to:

  • Mrs. Nangeroni’s Homeroom

  • Mrs. Kuznia’s Homeroom

  • And Mrs. Ketcham’s Homeroom

Our school raised over $3300 (plus some checks that were mailed directly to the Red Cross)!

Congrats to all!!
